Bug Description

Binary package hint: yaboot

Hi,

Is it possible, at least for testing, to replace
the line:
boot cd:,\install\yaboot
with
boot &device;:,\install\yaboot
in /install/ofboot.b

It makes booting the live CD from other devices (firewire, USB stick) a lot easier on many Macs: hold option key, choose Ubuntu, done.

This doesn't seen to be a bug. Please suggest your ideas to brainstorm.ubuntu.com if this is still an issue.

Looks like a valid wishlist bug, at the wrong level for brainstorm.ubuntu.com (which is typically about much more general ideas).

Is it possible to give yaboot itself the tbxi attribute? This would negate the need for the ofboot.b script.

I can see &device;: would work for a CDROM drive connected via USB. For an iso copied using dd to a USB flash drive, however, I think you would need &device;:2 in the ofboot.b script.

Correcting myself again!!! &device;: does work with a USB flash drive when the iso is copied with dd. So it would be great if the proposal in post #1 could be incorporated into precise.

FYI, I think the :2 is only needed when there is more than one partition.

Well this is getting embarrassing.... &device;: also works when there is more than one partition. So could the line be

boot &device;:,\\yaboot

This gives greater flexibility and allows the ofboot.b script to be used for persistence usb live sticks too.

One thing to mention though:

I can only boot my usb device from openfirmware, and it seems &device; is given different values depending on how you call :tbxi.

This works: boot usb/@1:2,\\:tbxi

This doesn't (&device; passes an extra colon) : boot usb/@1:,\\:tbxi

Another option is:

boot &device;:&partition;,\\yaboot
