Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

Marking this as confirmed due to the number of duplicates.

Sammie (or any duplicate bug reporters), could you please describe what you were doing at the time this crash occurred? Is this crash something you can reproduce? If so, could you explain how?

I was adding packages from the Ubuntu Software Center at the same time had APT open but was not installing anything from there. As it usually grabs the lock command because ATP is open it failed to lock and crashed.

I was typing a search in the top-right field while installing a program (namely VLC) when the Software Center crashed.
I am not able to reproduce this bug yet.

Hi there,

I had just loaded Ubuntu and was looking at IDE's when it crash.

Also (don't know if I add this here) I downloaded Ubuntu via 'burn to CD' the program failed to boot from CD and I had to install the autorun installer program.

I am new to this OS as I am wanting to teach myself programming.
