The common advice is either to downgrade ghostscript or to upgrade auctex.
I've installed a current version (source checkout as of 2011-03-27) of auctex and can report that preview mode works then.
Would be really nice to see a working combination of auctex/ghostscript in the finaly release of natty... :)

I can confirm this. This seems pretty important as the preview package is completely broken. Doesn't seem to be an easy fix.
Anyone reading this can try what I did by removing Ubuntu's provided auctex package and installing the snapshot version found here: theotp1. physik. uni-ulm. de/~ste/ comp/emacs/ auctex/ snapshots/ ftp/auctex- current. tar.gz
