Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

The crash occurred after a number of other crashes related to the Intl 8286SG GPU. It looks like support for it has been seriously compromised compared to 10.10 where it worked without problem also in 3D mode.

Thanks. This bug is probably a dupe of bug #715096 which we're already tracking for a different chip.

I doubt whether this bug has anything to do with Skype crashing the system. this error occurs directly after booting and my system crashed on almost every input made, besides it is a different chip. The situation is getting worse with every update. Now the system freezes directly after booting and the display is completely garbled.

The HP d530 SFF has been a very popular machine and HP sold millions of them especially to businesses, but they are hitting the second hand market now and I bought mine for 45 euro. It is a pity it does not work with Ubuntu. It does not work with Gnome nor with Unity, but I switched to xubuntu/xfce and there it works like a Swiss watch, including the transparency for the windows and windows decorations. Once in a while I will recheck the ubuntu flavor, since it is still installed.

I am not very experienced with ubuntu. As a user I have used it now as my main/only OS for 2 years, but I have not yet very much knowledge about the internals of Linux. However I know this type of complexity, because I designed and wrote parts of OSes for main frames and 16-bit minis also supporting vector based graphical radar displays back in the 70/80-ties.

I am a pensioner and I have some time to spend. So what kind of information do you need and how can I help to get it?

One things I need to know is how to enable/force a crash dump , most Internet sides explain how to do it from the command line, but that does not help with a frozen system and garbled display. The system does not even react to the power off button anymore. You really have to press it for 4 seconds.
