When connecting an external monitor, with a greater resolution, to my laptop the background in unity is not redrawn to cover the full desktop, see attached picture.

I can't reproduce this bug. Have you tried opening gnome-display-properties?

I've tried different settings with gnome-display-properties, yes. No luck.

I can, however, force the background to be redrawn correctly by switching workspace.

I've got some other problems with monitors as well. Maybe this bug is connected with https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/734756.

The issue you're describing doesn't sound related to Unity. Could you log into a Gnome 2 session and see if this issue persists?

It is related to Unity. I don't have this problem with Gnome 2.
