Bug Description

Even if there is no music player open, pressing play should still play music. Thus, it needs to open the default music player and start playing.

According to http://design.canonical.com/2011/03/quit/: "So in Ubuntu 11.04, the sound menu will show the Play button even for registered players that aren’t running. If you choose Play, the player will launch and then start playing." Don't know if it supports the multimedia key too though.

From my understanding, this is not related to BeatBox, in the sense that there is nothing with BeatBox to do to implement this feature. Right?

Naw, marking invalid for BeatBox. The solution should definitely be player agnostic and has to come from the desktop itself.

This works for Banshee and Rhythmbox on Natty but not with BeatBox. I think it does have something to do with BeatBox after all.

I think the controls become persistent for Rhythmbox and Banshee after they're launched for the first time.

yes, you are right. You give soundmenu the .desktop file for this to work.

This should be working, it works sometimes for me but I think that's because i have both the source version and PPA version, and it gets confused when I switch in between. Please let me know if it doesn't.
