my goodness, that coughed up a lot of stuff, but anyway here is the sequence of events from my perspective:
1. Did a recovery boot and ran dpkg which included a fglrx update, so I tried opening gdm
2. gdm opened successfully, so I started testing.
3. under .wine 1.3.16 found that the ole problem with gmax is not fixed (nothing new)
4. ported my files for SimCity 4 from 10.10
5. Got SimCity4 to run the same as on 10.10 under wine. No problems.
6. Did some fooling around with the catalyst engine to try to get SC4 to run in full screen mode, which it would not before.
It now runs, but it needs some tuning, so I exited the program (and wine) then this bug was popped up.

Tbis is beyond my current skill level, so all I can do is report it. The segmentation error catcher was enabled when I ran SC4. I will attach my startup script for sc4 below.

That version of ia32-libs had an older (buggy) version of mesa included in it which caused some troubles on amd64. Try with 20090808ubuntu11 or newer.

For me it's reproduced with ia32-libs 20090808ubuntu12 without WINE. I just:
1. Open CCC.
2. Open Display Manager section.
3. Open Color section.
4. Open Dislay Manager again.
5. Close CCC.
6. Get this crash.

Hey jwinterton,

You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric
is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade
and re-test if this issue is still present there.

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
close it.)

If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.

The new version of fglrx fixes this problem. I have upgraded to oneiric, and so this may certainly be closed.
