This is probably a problem with qt apps in gnome, but the menus text is black, which makes it barely visible in the default gnome theme.

You can try the following workaround:
1) Start Skype
2) Login
3) Go to Options
4) In the General Tab under the Choose style label select Desktop Settings from the list.
5) Click Apply
6) Restart Skype

Let me know if that has helped you. Thank you for reporting this bug and please report any other bugs you may find. Thanks for your help in improving Ubuntu.

Thanks! that worked. The fonts have a slightly different styling though.

A new skype version (2.2.0.25 beta) is available from partner repository, could you try to reproduce the bug with the latest version and tell us if the problem is still there?
