Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-cups-manager

When adding a printer with gnome-cups-manager in Edgy, I have multiple instances of my local USB printers shown (Specially they are HP Printers). While I can print using either instance, only one will give me the ability to use the HPLIP tools. I do have a screenshot that probably explain this better.

Do you have the packages foomatic-filters-ppds and/or hpijs-ppds installed? They are not needed any moe as CUPS auto-generates PPDs from the Foomatic database. Uninstall these packages and every printer should only show once.

Sorry, forhrt about my last comment, I didn't see that you were still in the printer auto-detection step. Here you see the printer twice as it is once directly detected by CUPS through its "usb" backend and once via HPLIP via the "hp" CUPS backend.

If you run "lpinfo -v" or use the CUPS web interface (http://localhost:631/admin/) you will also see two entries for your printer.

In the CUPS web interface you can clearly distinguish the two entries, all printer setup tools should do so, as it can always happen that more than one CUPS backend can be suitable for one and the same printer.

gnome-cups-manager is not maintained any more and will be replaced by printerdrake. printerdrake suppresses the non-HPLIP entry. See also
