Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

When I start synaptic it flashes a bit and then it closes itself
Starting it in a terminal window I see:
maurizio@edgy:~$ synaptic
Segmentation fault
in dmesg I read:
[ 56.160336] python[4641]: segfault at 0000000000000000 rip 00002b73d3cb30f0 rsp 00007fffd74261f8 error 4
[ 69.820744] synaptic[4692]: segfault at 0000000000000000 rip
00002aad8c5290f0 rsp 00007fff21722f28 error 4
I tried to remove *.bin files in /var/cache/apt/ and it works
but once I restart the PC and I start synaptic I have the same problem again

I removed *.bin files in /var/cache/apt/ and all files in /var/cache/apt/archives, too.
Now synaptic works fine.
bye

It seems a duplicate of bug 61708 but it is'nt equale
because I run gnome not kde and I don't use adept but synaptic

and I have not apt-index-watcher installed in my system!

This is a duplicate. kde gnome doesnt matter its apt that is broken. Apt is same on all DE's. apt-index-watcher tries to work around this problem by periodically
checking if the APT indexes have changed, and rebuilding the apt-front
indexes. I'm not real sure why you dont have it installed as far as i know its installed by default.

Thanks for your bugreport.

This seems to be most likely a duplicate of #75273 (apt-index-watcher got fixed for edgy-final). If you can still reproduce the problem I would be interessted if the debdiff fixes the problem for you or if you can provide a backtrace.

Thanks,
 Michael
