Starting Thunderbird from the control panel or otherwise starts and then disappears immediately and then never comes back on again.

Can you check wether it is linked to your installation or your profile. Juste move your profile : mv .thunderbird .thunderbird.bak and try to launch again Thunderbird.

If no crash occurs, the problem is linked to your profile, otherwise, it is an installation problem.

Same behavior for me. Tried removing profile. Now it crashes as soon as the first-run wizard is completed. The next time it crashes on startup.

I tried running it under gdb but 'mozilla-thunderbird' is a wrapper script, so gdb won't run it. I have no idea how to produce a backtrace. (Even though I have some experience debugging programs.) The documentation is woefully inadequate. I don't know how you can expect the average user to produce meaningful bug reports.

actually, since edgy you should be able to find a .crash file in /var/crash. If you submit that file we can take over. Can you still reproduce?
