Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

Hi!

When running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg yesterday my computer would always freeze when automatically testing for my monitor.

The screen would first go blank (black), then show some random bitpatterns and stay that way till I shut off the computer. Three-finger-salut and a soft power off were both ignored.

I am using a thinkpad T43p (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/ThinkpadT43p-2668 ) with a VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M24 1T [FireGL M24 GL] (rev 80) graphics card (according to lspci) running feisty.

Is the computer frozen or just the X session? Try ctrl-alt-F1 (or F2, etc.). To get to one of the other ttys. If you can get there, then we may be encountering similar problems (I have an A20m).

Also, ctrl-alt-backspace to restart X.
