Bug Description

Tested as per http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Hardware/X/ProprietaryDrivers#Fallback%20Testing

System doesn't fall back to open source/vesa drivers in case nvidia.ko is removed. Boot up fails, including fail-safe X.

I don't think this is the same bug as #522061. I get stuck at the ubuntu logo bootup-screen instead of a black screen.

This issue is resolved for me in the latest builds, so I guess this really was a duplicate of #522061.
