Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

Unity doesn't start on VirtualBox (with guest additions) while it used to.
Classic Desktop with compiz works find.

What's odd is that in the guest window I see only the background, but in the preview window of VirtualBox I see the desktop and that nautilus is running (no panel or launcher though)

Keyboard and mouse events are received and I can blindly interact with the desktop.

Hey Jean, can you go to full screen in the natty guest? After last nights update I cant seem to use the guest additions in natty at all. That includes the 3D that is used to run unity.

this is not a duplicate, guest additions builds fine, and I got this problem even before the X ABI change.
Seemless mode and fullscreen works fine in classic desktop + compiz, only Unity doesn't start.

The SIGABRT is just the result of the assertion when the memory allocation fails. I would say that frames 11/12 of the stack trace is closer to the problem, where it tries to allocate a texture surface with a width of (in my trace) 1279729667.

Michael Thayer (michael-thayer) wrote :

Looking at Jean-Baptiste's more detailed trace I see that width in the geo.width local variable in frame 14 (PanelMenuView::Refresh).

Well, not always actually. Sometimes I still get the same error when running compiz.

I've still the issue that doesn't allow me to adjust the guest resolution by resizing the window or to share the clipboard (but this is related to virtualbox-ose).

Unity (actually compiz) still won't work in virtualbox for me. It just restarts over and over, using 100% CPU. I am using virtualbox 4.0.4 and the matching guest utils from the repo.

When running compiz from a terminal I see this:

OpenGL Error: Out of memory trying to allocate 1013234308 bytes

Yeah, that's nearly 1GB of ram...

Not sure if this is the same bug, but I suspect it is.
