Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

The terminal window showed this to me. I read other bug related to this problem but for earlier versions. I cound not solve it. Please instruct me in detail as I am new user and not habitual to command. The following is the report the terminal window showed me:

Calculating the changes

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the
'update-manager' package and include the files in
/var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.

This can be a duplicate of bug 721306 and bug 614993 (and dozens of similar ones)

If the package xserver-xorg-video-nouveau is installed, in several cases the 10.04 to 10.10 upgrade fails with the error message

"Could not determine the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu"

Several persons have reported that after removal of that package the upgrade was successful.

Try this workaround: Open a terminal and enter the command:

sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

and try the upgrade again.

The log files confirm that is different from 721306 as
The problem lies most probably in package upstart-logd which is a package from hardy - why would that still be there on a lucid system?

Please open a terminal and execute the following commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade -f
and paste all output into a new comment of this bug thread
