can't install any package: "bad gateway" error

Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

Since today, whatever package I try to install, it always fails with either of the following error messages:

W: Failed to fetch http://......
  Connection failed

or

W: Failed to fetch http://.....
  Bad gateway
