I think I'm experiencing something similar but only since the last day or so and apparently only when chatting with Yahoo contacts.

My problem was related to the Evolution Integration plugin. Can you try to start pidgin without any plugins running?

Please close all running instances of pidgin/purple, make a backup of your ~/.purple directory, then remove ~/.purple/prefs.xml and restart pidgin. This will disable plugins.

Changed in pidgin (Ubuntu):

sorry guys. I forgot I submitted this bug a long time ago.

The problem was actually related to the GFire plugin. I got that fixed. The latest version of GFire has the same issue in 11.10, but its been reported to the Gfire team. So for me, I just had to remove GFire and wait for a patch.
