Bug Description

Binary package hint: wxmaxima

When I try to work with Unicode chars. for example when I input ESC + delta + ESC the delta will be replaced with δ. However when I just try to work with this, wxMaxima gets stuck. It seems that wxMaxima is unicode capable, but the underlying maxima not.
This bug is also described in detail here.

I was told by maxima developers (when reporting this bug to them) that this is a problem in GCL (Gnu Common Lisp), which is not unicode-compatible. It would be very nice to have support for this feature, though.

So is it a dependency problem, or because maxima was compiled with the wrong compiler? When I look into the the dependencies from maxima there are no listed to GCL. However is there are a way to fix it? At least a workaround would be superb.

It is a dependency problem because maxima is based on GNU Common Lisp. But if you just would like to use Greek symbols in your equations you may use something like that: '%delta'. It will be replaced by the 'delta' symbol in the wxMaxima output.

Sure thats how I used it the whole time... Unfortunately the %delta can't be applied to variable definitons (The right left of :).
But when its a dependency problem, why there is no dependency listed to gcl?

Maxima:
Depends on: libc6 (>= 2.11), libgmp3c2, libreadline6 (>= 6.0), libx11-6, zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.4),
