Bug Description

Related to bug #729002 ('First four items in Dash begin "Find" "Find" "Find" "Find" ')

Usually menu items that have multiple decision steps with a "…" ellipsis to hint to the user that they will be able to (and required to) undertake additional choices before a final action is selected.

These are missing from the "Find" items, yet they differ from the immediate actions below of Web/Photos/Email/Music.

It's not an Ayatana design task. It just needs to be corrected in Unity.

This bug should have been reported to Ayatana-design. On review, this change is *not* approved as it conflicts with the signed off visual designs. For reference, all changes to user visible functionality need to have a status of "Fix Released" in Ayatana-design before they are acted upon in project Unity

@John: sorry, Alex marked as triaged, so I tought it was ready to be worked in.

Anyway, the lack of ellipsis does not conflicts with HIG?

Matthew Paul Thomas (mpt) wrote :

The HIG does not cover use of ellipses in launchers or launcher categories, though it does contain a screenshot showing "Add/Remove…" with ellipsis.

With very few exceptions, the implied task for any launcher or launcher category always requires further input, and adding an ellipsis to all of them would add clutter without making anything more understandable. In the context of a launcher or an "Applications" menu, it is obvious that the items are launchers or launcher categories.

However, the "Add/Remove…" example suggests that when something is labelled with a verb phrase, an ellipsis becomes necessary to explain that the action is not instant. For example, "Find More Apps" without ellipsis could be interpreted as meaning that the results you're seeing are just preliminary, and that clicking there will search for more and add them to the existing view. Adding an ellipsis would be one way of clarifying this; removing the "Find" verb would be another.

Thank you to Matthew for the analysis, I'm happy with the suggestion of dropping the duplicated "Find " from the start and expressing that thought icon commonality being a better solution.
