Bug Description

Binary package hint: ttf-freefont

There are certain characters which are exclusive to Persian and not available in Arabic (پ ژ گ چ). They should connect to next character like other arabic and persian characters, but they don't. This works correctly in FreeSans, but not in FreeSerif.

Hi Sineau!

This is really not a good place to report individual problems with FreeFont, or any other software not maintained by Ubuntu.
These reports are very rarely forwarded to people who could do anything about them.

Please post reports about FreeFont at
https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/

In the mean time, I'll see if I can do anything about this from the info you gave.

Cheers!

Hi Sineau,

First, there is no Arabic range in FreeSans. Your sample is from some other font.
All the Arabic in the FreeFont family is in the Serif face.

Could it be so simple, as adding lookups to replace the isolated form of the letters
with their initial, median, and final forms?

Well, those lookups were missing. This isn't a surprise: I put the lookups for Arabic
in myself, using whatever resources I could find, and probably wasn't aware that the
Persian ones weren't in the lists I was using.

OK so the change is in CVS. In principle you could get it from there.
If you would like to help, let's move the discussion over to the FreeFont bugs list.

See you there!

Hi Steve,
After submitting this bug I realised these fonts maintained by GNU, but I couldn't found how should I report a bug there. :p But I'll put some more time and figure out how to do it.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Did you send the report upstream? Could you tell us the bug number, so we can add a bugwatch that will inform us about its status? Thanks in advance.

I'm marking the upstream bug as "fix commited" for now, following Steve's comment.

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS beta2 and I still have this problem. I have fixed it on my desktop using FontForge, it is fairly easy for me. I am willing to spend some of my time to fix it. Please tell me what should I do.

Hi Masoud,

The Persian/Arabic range of FreeSerif has been replaced.
The replacement will be part of an upcoming release of the font.
It is unlikely this new release will be part of Ubuntu 12.04.

If you would like, we can discuss this on the GNU FreeFont bug page.
     https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?group=freefont
You can also check out the latest FontForge sources there.
I'd be glad to make snapshots available to you, and would very much like
to hear your comments!

Thanks!

Hi Steve,

It's awesome! Thank you :)

Since morning I am working on other characters. I found some missing glyphs, I replaced some wrong glyphs, and I enhanced the look of the most ugly (or misleading) ones. Will you replace again if I put it here?

And yes, I am more than happy to test it further. Right now I am testing my modifications in LibreOffice.
