cheese doesn't record smooth video

Binary package hint: cheese

when i select video, the playback is smooth. but as soon as i hit record, the video becomes choppy. if i open the recorded video, the video is still choppy. not sure if the problem isn't with the webcam driver, and not with cheese itself, though, i have used cheese in the past and the video was smooth with it, but this functionality is rare, and it will go back to working choppy again.
