Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

When I attach my external screen to the notebook, both screens are turning black and I'm not able to control my system any more.

Sometimes it is possible to log out attach the screen and log in again, with the screens are both working in the right position and and right resolution.
But as I said that is only sometimes the case. Normaly it is just the same effect as both screens turn black and I have to reboot.

If you need any further information, please ask!

Does it still happen if you boot into Classic Desktop from the login panel?

Actually,

that's what i tried before. It just turned out that's "easier" to attach the external screen by login in at classic desktop (without effects).
But this doesn't mean it is working properly. It's again a trial and error.

The normal way I try to attach is:

-Log in (unity) without external screen attached

- Log out

-attach external screen and log in (classic desktop (without effects))

-log out

-log in to unity again with external screen attached (only possible if the xserver didn't fail two steps before)

So far this is working maybe 40% of the times. But since I got some problems with the booting as well (xserver sometimes doesn't start at all). I don't want to risk it too often.

Hope that helps.

Hmm, not sure I completely understand your previous message but I get the impression from it that the external screen works right with classic desktop (no effects), so it sounds like this is a dupe of the bugs relating to compiz' handling of multi-monitor configurations. I'll bump it over there.

If you can reproduce multihead problems when using just metacity, then that may suggest an actual X issue in which case you can set it back to X.
