Bug Description

After updating to the latest HAL version (0.5.7-1ubuntu18.2) in kubuntu dapper with kde 3.5.5 installed it is no longer possible to mount USB sticks. Unfortunately this seems to be a very recurrent problem and occurs every time that there is either a KDE or a HAL update. Once again the descriptive error message reads: "An unknown error has occurred" when trying to double-click the USB icon when "media:/" is selected in konqueror. Again, mounting as root works. Please find additional detailed descriptions of this problem in bug # 65662.

None of the workarounds listed in bug # 65662 fix the problem in the latest update for me, only downgrading restores normal functionality.

Same thing here. Downgrading hal packages fixed it.

No workaround works for me...

How to downgrade?

Revision history for this message
Marco Antonucci (marco-antonucci) wrote :

I did it this way:

sudo apt-get install hal=0.5.7-1ubuntu18.1 libhal-dev=0.5.7-1ubuntu18.1 libhal-storage1=0.5.7-1ubuntu18.1 libhal1=0.5.7-1ubuntu18.1

If you don't have the libhal-dev package already installed, you can omit it

Problem confirmed here too. I have been using the /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf workaround since upgrading to kde 355.

I can also confirm the downgrade fixes the problem.

I can also confirm the same. Automounting fails with kde 3.5.5 and works when downgraded.

I'm not sure this is a dupe of bug #65662.

This bug is about the latest HAL-update breaks usb-mounting in KDE 3.5.5

Bug #65662 is about upgrading to KDE 3.5.5 breaks usb-mounting with the back then "current" version af HAL.

I've been using KDE 3.5.5 since the release, and hadn't had any usb-mounting-issue until the lastest release of HAL.

Having submitted both bugs, I can definately say that they are not duplicates of each other.

The problem can be resolved applying this patch to the debian source package and rebuilding it.

Hi Daniel,

where did you get those udated packages? Did you build them yourself, or are these (semi-)official upgrades which should be tested (although just two lines have changed in the source) before being distributed?

Daniel Eckl (daniel-eckl) wrote :

Hi Ulrich!

You should get them automatically, because they are in the same repository as KDE 3.5.5 which causes the problem in first place.

deb http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-latest/ dapper main

OK, thanks!

I was using a different mirror which wasn't up-to-date.

But now, the updated packages work for me, too.

Hi, I use a Kubuntu dapper with kde 3.5.5

I keep it up to date using this repository
deb http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-355 dapper main

the package 0.5.7-1ubuntu18.2 broke the automatic mounting for usb drives
I still had a prompt from kde to open the drive in a new window but the drive would not appear on the desktop and was not mounted.

I tried the package 0.5.7-1ubuntu18.3 but it did not fix the problem

the package 0.5.7-1ubuntu18.1 is currently working perfectly on my system

Good afternoon,

I see there were several people who had this bug fixed by updates, but there is one reference to a person having problems with edgy still. Are you still having problems wit USB stick mount in KDE 3.5.5? There should be updates that have fixed this.
Please update this bug if you are still having problems in Edgy.

THanks,

Jonathan

I think this was once fixed by an update, but a subsequent hal update means dapper is still suffering from this bug. Workaround on dapper is downgrading hal.

So! I'm going to close this bug as fixed released.
