Bug Description

Hello,

in Ubuntu 10.10 (and derivatives) I can't have xfce4-notifyd and a KDE application both installed.

In my case, I want to have k3b, krusader and xfce4-notifyd installed, but when I try to install the former, apt wants to remove xfce4-notifyd. Clearly these applications are in deb-conflict. I wonder why is that? The conflict doesn't exist with gnome's notify-osd, so why I can't use the xfce4-notifyd?

This problem doesn't exist in Ubuntu 10.04 (and derivatives), which is particularly painful just after a dist-upgrade, when you find, that your favourite apps suddenly can't coexist.

Regards,
phan

PS. Affects both x86 and x64 archs

Xfce4-notifyd conflicts with notification-daemon, and this is correct (they both provide the same file and the same features).

That was Jonathan's point.
If xfce4-notifyd provides the same functionality as notification-daemon to the API consuming application then it must replace&conflict the virtual package notification-daemon thus making xfce4-notifyd the present implementation of notification-daemon (of course for all sorts of reasons no conflict but runtime selection makes a bazillion times more sense).

affects: kdebase-runtime (Ubuntu) → ubuntu

Sigh, no reason to reassign it to xfce4-notifyd then...
