Despite being labelled an A8 optimisation, this shows a positive result in a popular benchmark on A9 NEON in GCC 4.6.

Ramana asked me to benchmark it with spec, but the results were inconclusive, so I'm still looking at it. I'll have to check the original benchmark results are reproducible. (It might be that other changes in mainline have made this change less profitable.)
