Bug Description

After upgrading my laptop to 8gb of ram and adding a new SSD as a primary drive, I tried to do a new install. The live CD for both 10.10 (desktop i386, netbook i386), and 11.04 (desktop i386) both boot up and recognize my new SSD drive for installation. However, after successful install, on reboot, nothing happens after GRUB tries to boot.

In both cases the -pae kernel is installed.

When I ripped out the 8gb of ram, and went back to 3gb, and re-installed from scratch, the SSD worked just fine, using the obvious default desktop kernel.

I tried to compare the configs, but the only differences I could see, besides the 64GB Himem, would be a couple of SCSI drivers and some Xen stuff.

After successful install with 3GB, added 8GB back, and successfully loaded with generic kernel "2.6.35-02063504-generic #201008271919 SMP Fri Aug 27 20:27:22 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux" and 2.6.35-22-generic Maverick kernel. Other than only seeing 3GB of RAM, they work.

Attempting to boot with 2.6.35-22-generic-pae failed.

Hi Dan,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

tagging this as natty too, since I can see the same thing after upgrading to the latest nightly build.

Dan Trevino, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please report the results following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelBoot ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag.
