My experience was similar to the first description. I typed in the letters "syan" in the Applications Place text field. Since this was obviously not how to spell Synaptic, I hit the backspace. Compiz crashed.

crashed again but didn't drop out asking to report a bug as it did previous times. The whole screen locked up and couldn't do anything. recovered by dropping to tty1 and running "sudo restart gdm".

affects: compiz (Ubuntu) → unity (Ubuntu)
