added items to unity side bar
switched between desk tops (desktop 1, 2, 3, 4 [testing functionability, nothing activated or launched)]
switched back to desktop 1
unity side bar and panels disappeared, could not open or close anything, power button refused to shutdown.

Please test with the following kernel:

  http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/

In this newer kernel code is a fix to enlarge unfenced alignments, which appears to be a problem specific to i915/i945. If that kernel makes this lockup bug go away, then we can investigate extracting and backporting it. If not and we can rule out that fix for this issue, upstream (Chris Wilson) will investigate further.
