not sure this is a bug, I'm a n006! Tried to install based on the clamav page instructions for reinstalling (originally installed earlier version using ubuntu software center), uninstalled the old version, created a clamav user, installed the latest version, it seemed to compile and install, but can't freshclam. I'm using Lucid on a 64bit machine.

This isn't a bug in the package, but a consequence of you having manually created the clamav user. What you need to do is remove (deluser) the clamav user you manually created and then retry the installation. I'm turning this into a support request so you can get help with how to do that.
