Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

I have printed out a PDF (Is attached!) on a HP Photosmart 2600. No matter if I print using evince (2.32.0) or Adobe (9.4.1) I get a strange output. Instead of the normal text just some letters are spread on the paper (but lines and so are printed normally). Cups Version: 1.4.4-6ubuntu2.3.
Printer: HP Photosmart 2600 Series hpijs, 3.10.6

Can you please follow the instructions in the sections "CUPS error_log" and "Capturing print job data" on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems for both evince and Adobe Reader? Thanks.

OK, here the information you requested:

With Document Viewer 2.32.0:
------------------------------------------
-> I printed just the first page, but I think this should be enough info, because the strange output allready appears on first page:

Scan of the print of the first page: Viewer_2_32_0_ScanFirstPage.jpg
Error_Log: Viewer_2_32_0_ErrorLog
File from section "Capturing print job data": d00106-001_capturing_print_job_data
file ~/printout gives "pdf document, version 1.5"

With Adobe Reader 9.4.2:
------------------------------------------
-> I printed just the first page, but I think this should be enough info, strangely, this time it works with Adobe Reader. See more info below!:

-> Strange! This time it works with Adobe Reader.... The Version increased from 9.4.1 (When I reported the bug) to 9.4.2 (Which I have now). I have no idea why it works now....

Here is the logs and so on nevertheless:

Scan of the print of the first page: Adobe_9_4_3_ScanFirstPage.jpg
Error_Log: Adobe_9_4_2_ErrorLog
File from section "Capturing print job data": d00108-001_capturing_print_job_data
file ~/printout gives "PostScript document text conforming DSC level 3.1, Level 3" --> So there might be the difference? This time it is a postscript doc.

All the files you find in "Printing_Problem.tar.gz" attached. The original file which causes the problem you find in the init-post!

Regards!
Michael

Can you try out whether the problem still occurs when you switch from the hpijs to the hpcups driver for your printer?

Start system-config-printer via System -> Administration -> Printing, right-click the icon of your printer, select "Properties", and click "Change" at "Make and Model". Click "Forward" on the screen for the manufacturers and on the next screen change the driver by the list on the right. Choose an entry which contains something with "hpcups". Click "Forward" until you reach the end of the wizard and "Apply" to close it.

Can you print your file from evince now?

Independent of the result of this can you try a live CD of Natty? Does printing your file from evince work there out-of-the-box?

Yes, I'll try that as soon as I have access to the printer again. Meanwhile, could you please check the state of this thread? I was not sure which is the correct state to set...

Thanks!

Changing the driver from hpijs to the hpcups driver didn't work! I have still the exactly same problem.

Didn't have the time to check it with Natty live-cd... will do it next time, if still needed...

Regards! Michael

We would very much like if you do the test with the Natty live CD (or if you update to Natty after this week's release do the test with your new Natty system). Thank you very much.

Hi!

Just tried it with the latest Natty Beta on VirtualBox.

With:
- Driver: HP Photosmart Series 2600, hpcups 3.11.1
- Document Viewer (evince) 2.32.0

--> It works fine, out of the Box! (Printer was also automatically installed, nice!)

Do you need more info? If the problem is OK for you now, then I'm fine (because normaly I have no printing problems). If you wan't to know what the problem is with my 10.10 installation, I will be glad to help!

Michael, thanks for your answer. It means that the problem is solved from Natty on. So a solution for you would be to watch out for the "Update to Natty" button in the Update Manager (from tomorrow on) and as soon as it appears, click it and do the update. It is only one day away from today.

There are many fixes in Natty and I have no idea which fix solved your problem. Evince and its graphics library, Cairo, got improved, many bugs in Ghostscript got fixed, and for the HP inkjets, Ghostscript got even replaced by Poppler. So many changes happened. In addition, there can be a font problem on your system which is not present on the clean live CD system. The latter is a good candidate as this bugs has neither duplicates nor votes of other people suffering the same problem.

If you plan to update anyway it is not worth to do further investigations now, but tell if the problem persists after the update. In such a case try also removing and recreating your print queue. If then the problem still persists, we need to do more investigations (or you do a clean install of Natty then).

I'll check what happens after the update to 11.04. Will post it here. Thanks!

(Has the state of this thread to be changed? Please do it if it is appropriate, I'm not familiar with this status system.)
