Cannot play movie files from a network share

Bug Description

I have ubuntu 6.10 on my server and desktop. When i'm on my desktop/laptop i cannot play for example movie files from the smb share.

I aslo have an xbox running xmbc. And it can access the smb share perfectly. So i think it's something on the client side. Not the server side.

Didn't have this problem with dapper.

which movie player are you using?
do the files play if you copy them to your home folder?
what happens when you try to play a movie? is there an error message?

Totem and mplayer

totem gives the following error message for example:

When I copy the file to the local desktop. It plays perfectly.

I've got the very same problem with feisty. Sometime it works, some times it does not. All media players affected including audio players such as rythmbox and audacious.
Copying works at fine and at full speed.
