Thank you for the bug report Christian. We need more details in order to understand and fix the issue. Is that in tooltip text of the launcher icons? Or in the dash? A screenshot of the problem would be very useful.

The icons in these categories are also affected. It does not affect unity-2d-launcher.

Thank you for the details and screenshots Christian, I’m confirming this issue and we’ll investigate it.
I assume your system locale is German, could you please attach the output of the `locale` command in a terminal?

Now, that’s interesting, I’m observing the same issue (my locale is fr_FR.utf8), and I’m pretty sure I didn’t before, so it must be a recent regression.

Note that it’s not only the section names, it’s also the group headers and the grid items themselves that suffer this issue.

Note that another consequence of the issue is that those files that live in directories with non-ascii characters in their name cannot be open from the dash (see duplicate bug #715525):

Error showing url: Error stating file '/home/osomon/Vid%C3%A9os/The Goonies (1985) BRRip H264 %5BInsayneRG%5D/The Goonies - Bluray.mp4': No such file or directory

This regression was introduced when our dee binding switched from using the D-Bus API to using libdee (revision 393 in the trunk, and revision 26 in lp:dee-qt).

Fixes against dee-qt and unity-2d itself are needed to completely solve the issue. The attached branches provide those fixes, merge requests have been submitted and are pending a review.

I think there are still problems related to this. I'm not sure though. Characters display alright, but I still can't open folders with non-ascii characters (such as "Música", the default music folder), nor do their elements show up in Places (none of the songs stored in my "Música" folder show up in their category).

Indeed, there are still serious problems most likely related to encoding. I attach the unity-2d-places log (output of "killall unity-2d-places && unity-2d-places" in a terminal)

@Sebastian: that would be because the fix has been committed to the trunk, but updated packages are not in the PPA yet. Packages are built every night, so look out for tomorrow’s updates, they should fix the issue. If they don’t please let us know!

Thanks for confirming the fix Christian. Though bugs are marked as Fix Released only when finished the milestone. It's symbolic but quite nice for us developers to say, "we are done with the milestone now" :)
