Installed from the Software Centre when I already had manual Redmine install on my machine. Not sure if this had anything to do with it.

You did not configure your mysql server :
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO).
unable to connect to mysql server.

Please configure it, or if you don't care, use the sqlite backend (and install redmine-sqlite)

Thanks. I was asked to submit a report which is what i did. The Redmine installation never asked for mysql username and password, simply if i want to use mysql, sqlite etc. So I guess this is a bug for the Redmine team.

Then you probably need to choose sqlite instead of mysql.
dpkg-reconfigure -plow redmine
