1. Install Ubuntu Alternate on a VM
2. Reboot
3. Login
4. At the prompt "Your hardware doesn't support 3D" select Change Session
Result:
Empty desktop.
Nautilus is working because a right click on the desktop shows the contextual menu but no icons on the desktop, no panel
Metacity is also working
No evidence of a crash in any log file.
