Bug Description
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server - AMD64
Server: HP Proliant DL120G6
Firstly I want to point out that this is NOT one just one set of drives or just one server It has happened to many of the same server/drive types.
If I install the above server with 2 X 250 GB drives - Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 (ST3250318AS) Software RAID is always fine - i.e it works perfectly on the server.
If I install the above server with 2 X 500GB drives - Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 (ST3500418AS) Software RAID will not boot the system
I get when booting the system:-
mount: mounting /dev/disk/
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or directory
Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init.
No init found. Try passing init= bootarg
I have just tested the 2X250 drives worked fine (3 installs) 2X500 failed with above error whilst booting - on the exact same system - I also used the exact same partitioning scheme (obviously the 2X500GB the / partition is bigger) - I do not RAID swap
There seems to be a bug between Ubuntu / swraid and the ST3500418AS model HD.
The same setup installs Centos absolutely fine - so it appears to be just related to Ubuntu (not tried Debian Lenny yet)
- To confirm again this is not just one server / 2XHd's - the exact same thing has occurred with at least 6 servers (all HP Proliant DL120G6) and the same 2 X 500GB hd's
- No config/bios change occurred - the 2X250 drives just works as expected the 2X500 will not boot afterwards.
- H/W RAID is disabled in the bios - Sata modes compatible and AHCI result in same thing

Hi yossarian_uk,
Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http:// cdimage. ubuntu. com/daily/ current/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications- >Accessories- >Terminal) . It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.
apport-collect -p linux 712382
Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https:/ /wiki.ubuntu. com/KernelMainl ineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs- upstream- testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs- upstream- testing' text. Please let us know your results.
Thanks in advance.
