Emacs visual glitches when running under compiz in natty

When running emacs23 under natty’s compiz, there are rampant visual glitches that interfere with normal editing. For example, deleted characters sometimes don’t disappear or cause another character on the line to appear doubled, and the cursor leaves black splotches. It looks like some rectangles are not being fully painted. See attached screenshot.

The glitches go away when the window is moved, but then accumulate again with further editing.

There are no problems under metacity. Also, maverick did not have these problems (even with natty’s emacs23).
