Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

using the oldfassioned gnome desktop on natty i have severel problems with compiz.
first of all i cant move windows around on the screen. grabbing the window at the top bar does nothing.
second normally you can disable compiz by selecting no visual effects adn then use metacitty, but that option is no longer available.
i am running an updated natty, and i have an ati grafixcard
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS780M/RS780MN [Radeon HD 3200 Graphics]
using the free driver. i cant install the proporitarry driver because jockey closes unexpected, and i cant report that error cause of problems with libdrm-nouveau1a that cant be updated eather.

my only solution is starting the terminal and running nohup metacity --replace manually in order to get a working desktop

Thanks for the bug report. are you still facing the first issue of not being able to drag windows? Also the 'Visual Effects' tab was removed because now Unity is the main desktop shell and if the option to disable 'visual effects' is provided people will end up with only metacity and also the change between gnome-panel and unity is a little too big to enable people to switch between them.

About the driver problem I believe that issue should be fixed too.

If you are still facing any issue please report separate bugs for each issue.

Changed in compiz (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid

Installed Natty on the 11th of April and compiz is not working at all. I suspect it is a driver problem, glx extensions do not seem to be running.

I have an ATI Radeon 1400 (mobility) and I used to be able to run perfectly compiz since hardy originally with the proprietary driver, lately with the free one. On maverick everything was working fine.

There seems to be a number of people with the same or similar problems from this thread:
