Bug Description

Binary package hint: ttf-dejavu

When printing using the dejavu font, some greek characters appear smudged in the printout. This happens only to accented characters. I don't think it has anything to do with printer drivers, as I have heard of another person having the same problem with a different printer. The same problem appears also when printing into a postscript file.

Could you please provide a source file (.odt, .txt) that one can use to demonstrate the problem?

I took
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/8219771/output.ps
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ttf-dejavu/+bug/70824/comments/6)
and I run

$ ps2pdf output.ps
Segmentation fault
$ ls -l output.pdf
-rw-r--r-- 1 simos simos 22779 2007-06-28 00:57 output.pdf
$

Let's ignore the segmentation fault for a moment. The PDF file is generated correctly.
Evince shows the PDF file correctly as it should.
Apparently the problem is with the display of Postscript files in Evince.
When evince displays a Postscript file, it invokes Ghostscript,

/usr/bin/gs -sDEVICE=x11alpha -dNOPLATFONTS -dGraphicsAlphaBits=4 -dTextAlphaBits=4 -dDOINTERPOLATE -dNOPAUSE -dQUIET -dSAFER -

(when you view a .ps file with evince, go to the console and type "ps").

I was not able to reproduce the problem on Edgy.
I am attaching a sample .odt file.
In the next entry you can view the resulting PS file (views ok on my system)
b) The resulting PS file (ok on my system with evince) - I chose to print to file with OOo.

Testing abiword in Fedora 7, using DejaVu Sans Mono, pdf and ps output, with interesting results

- ps output in Ghostview (gv) is smudged

- ps output in KGhostview is smudged

- ps output in Evince is smudged

- Evince shows the pdf correctly. However it prints it out smudged on my Laserjet 1015 printer

- Ghostview (gv) shows the pdf smudged. Furthermore a console appears with the following messages:

**** Warning: Embedded symbolic TT fonts must contain a cmap for platform=1 Encoding=0

- KGhostview shows the pdf smudged.

- KPDF show the pdf correctly in main view, but smudged in print preview! It also prints it smudged.

- Acrobat Reader shows the pdf correctly, it silently fails to print it at all.

There is no difference whether using the pdf created by save as or print as.
