Some parts of the screen are not updated

Bug Description

Sections of the screen (randomly) are not properly updated when changed. This is very annoying since i have to minimize/maximize the affected window to force the "refreshing".

This happens esporadically and sometimes scrolling up and down a bit, or minimizing and restoring, or moving, etc. force to refresh that specific part of the screen.

I think this could be a bug in the 64 bit version of the display driver, since i have a friend which owns the exact same notebook (we bought it together, it's a Thinkpad Edge 13'' (Intel Version) model 0196, which comes with an Intel 4500 MHD chipset ) and he installed Ubuntu 32-bit and he doesn't experience this.

Hi frapell,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, i followed the documentation and installed http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.35.10-maverick/

Problem still persist, i'm not sure, but i think is less frequent.

I'm attaching 2 pictures showing the problem a bit better:

First of all, they are photos and not screenshots, because when i tried to take a screenshot the whole screen updates and the problem dissapear

As you can see, i'm in the desktop preferences, and when i switch to "Mouse Actions" the right part of the screen doesn't get updated. When i hover the mouse, it does, and it gets repainted with what is actually there.

I've exact the same problem with Linux Mint 10 KDE (it is based on Ubuntu 10.10).
I've installed update of xserver-xorg-video-intel from the x-swat ppa and everithing is ok now.
I followed recommendations on this page: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=109&t=66815&p=390095#p388593

I _thought_ this sounded like a video driver bug.

I cannot test, because i'm using Debian now...

i can, however, tell you, that in the time i was experiencing this issue, I tried ubuntu 32-bit, Arch and Debian (All with KDE), and i didn't experience the issue at all. So it might be something with the 64-bit driver.

kind regards.

Hey frapell,

Thanks for your interest in Ubuntu.

Thanks for testing maverick during its development period. Unfortunately it looks like this bug report didn't get attention during the maverick development period. But I see there's not been more comments on the bug since the release, which makes me wonder if this is still an issue for you?

If you've not seen this issue since maverick's release yourself, it may have been solved by kernel or X or other updates that occurred late in the release; if so, would you mind please closing the bug for us? Go to the URL mentioned in this bug report, click the yellow icon(s) in the status column and set to 'Fix Released'.

If you no longer have the hardware needed to reproduce the problem, or otherwise feel the bug no longer needs tracked in Launchpad, you can set the status to 'Invalid'.

If you are the original reporter and still have this issue, just reply to this email saying so. (Or set the bug status to Confirmed.) If you are able to re-test this against 11.04 Natty Narwhal (our current development focus) and find the issue still affects Natty, please also run 'apport-collect <bug-number>' while running natty, which will add fresh logs and debug data, and flag it for the Ubuntu-X development team to look at.

As i said before, i'm no longer using Ubuntu, so i don't know if this is still happening.

I'm marking it "Invalid" as requested.
