Hang in FUTEX_WAIT compiling Scala in 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10 running in VirtualBox

I ran into a bug that has been reported for years but apparently hasn't been fixed yet due to difficulty reproducing the problem.

Ubuntu 10.10 running in VirtualBox
1GB memory allocated to VirtualBox machine
400GB disk allocated to VirtualBox machine
Get a copy of the Scala source code via svn and build it by typing "ant".

The Scala project (www.scala-lang.org) uses "ant" to build the project.

The Scala build proceeds extremely slowly and ultimatlely hangs with both java processes in a FUTEX_WAIT state (futex_wait_queue_me).

The problem does not reproduce on XBuntu; only Ubuntu.

I've seen this problem documented as having something to do with "Assistive Technologies" being turned on. They are not turned on in this repro.
