package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 2

Tried to re-enable proprietary fglrx driver using hardware drivers application.
It had been working before but was likely disabled when a new Linux kernel was installed by the updater.
When using the app, got "ubuntu ati driver installArchives() failed"
found advice to completely remove fglrx and re-install.
This failure occurred during the remove stage.
Using ubuntu10.04
