Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

It is very difficult to try to find out how to enable tcp in Xorg. In the "old days" one could grep /etc for nolisten and find the corresponding file. This method no longer works. To simplify finding the right place and to help those of us with bad memories, please add the following lines to /etc/gdm/custom.conf

# uncomment these line to remove "-nolisten tcp" from Xorg
#[security]
# DisallowTCP=false

(I wasn't sure how to submit a patch to correctly accomplish this task as this file appears to be generated somewhere in the packaging scripts).

This also doesn't appear to work in Natty. I still have not figured out how to enable it.

File in natty is now /usr/share/gdm/gdm.schemas

Really? What is the syntax you need to add now? Nothing added to the documentation? Does greping through /etc/ reveal some docxs?

Do all of the gnome dev's really not use tcp? No one uses x2x?

I'm guessing its a bug, as there are two copies of gdm configs. one in /usr/share/gdm which is what is used, and also /etc/gdm which is not. You can probably add the DisallowTCP=false to a custom.conf file (which does not exist in /usr/share/gdm. but I haven't tested this. I just changed true to false in the gdm.schema file under DisallowTCP.

Your last post was confusing. Are you totally sure that creating the file with the contents I originally posted does not work? The file being:

/etc/gdm/custom.conf

It is absolutely not acceptable to require changes to anything in /usr/ so there must be some way to modify something in /etc/

Jeff, I'm working with a machine upgraded from 10.10 to 11.4
I also have been trying to get X to listen to TCP.
After adding /etc/gdm/custom.conf to have
[security]
DisallowTCP=false
and changing /etc/gdm/gdm.schemas
security/DisallowTCP to false
without success.

But after changing /usr/share/gdm/gdm.schemas
security/DisallowTCP to false
Success.

And broken behavior IMHO.

Wow that is terrible. This configuration option should be in /etc and
not in /usr and is certainly a violation of FHS.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the stable release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
