Bug Description

for screenshots and explanation.

Basically, trying to go to the console from an x-session causes gibberish to cover the screen until I switch back to the x-session, which then fails to display and must be restarted.

Showed up when I updated to Edgy Eft.

I don't see how is this is a duplicate bug, as
https://launchpad.net/bugs/37678
reports on a bug that seems related to the system starting and X hanging. Here, the system runs perfectly fine, it's just that accessing the consoles doesn't work.

Also, the prescribed workaround of editing out DRI doesn't change the fact that the ctr-alt-f[1-6] consoles are gibberish. It seemed to make it so the I didn't have to relaunch X on trying to return from a gibberish console, but the console was still gibberish.

You're right. I misread the original report. I thought that your system would freeze, as well. However, the garbled console and X displays have been reported in other bug reports, as well.
Check out bug #67487 and #26513 for instance. They sound quite similar to your problem.

Slogger and Asraniel, try booting without "splash". If usplash is the problem, this is a duplicate of bug #63558.

On my machine removing usplash let me get to the consoles, but it still doesn't transfer back to the x-session correctly.
(I have to relaunch x on returning to the x session window because it only shows my mouse.)

Slogger, that you have to relaunch X after VT switching, is probably another bug. If you can't find it reported somewhere else, reopen this bug and please attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

just wanted to note at this late date that removing quiet splash seemed to get rid of this for me.
