Firefox in ubuntu 6.10 Edgy does not play video streams

Bug Description
First i upgraded to 6.10 from 6.06. I must be honest. Ubuntu simply is the best. Simple nice and even entertaining when installing....yes you can browse in between installation. So i decided to stick with it. But...i like to watch TV on the web (NASA TV etc. our local TV makes a online archive of it's program!). And the trouble....those streams don't work. I installed all codecs and all plugins and even reinstalled the 6.10 from scratch. If i look at the information on "about:plugins" typed into firefox, i have every posible mime type supported (wmv,asf,

1. removing ubuntu-desktop is no problem since this is a meta package with no contents but dependencies
2. I've installed VLC and the vlc plugin for firefox and the only thing I get is a black window and the text "(no video)" great. Well not quite what it was supposed to do.
3. This is essential since enjoying video in the www is a killer feature in modern OSs !
