Bug Description

First i upgraded to 6.10 from 6.06. I must be honest. Ubuntu simply is the best. Simple nice and even entertaining when installing....yes you can browse in between installation. So i decided to stick with it. But...i like to watch TV on the web (NASA TV etc. our local TV makes a online archive of it's program!). And the trouble....those streams don't work. I installed all codecs and all plugins and even reinstalled the 6.10 from scratch. If i look at the information on "about:plugins" typed into firefox, i have every posible mime type supported (wmv,asf,avi,ram...etc). Sure i went by the book. I read the manuals. Then i installed kaffeine,mplayer,vlc,gxine....and nogo results. AND when the firefox should start the plugin and play the stream nothing happens. I read somewhere and thought to remove firefox totem plugin...but what do you know...in synaptic it says it will have to remove the ubuntu desktop also. So i figured it out it is somehow embeded in a new gnome desktop. OK! It is good. At least it was the best till now. Now it just sit there opens a white-brownish square and wait's for Godot....Somebody should look at it!

1. removing ubuntu-desktop is no problem since this is a meta package with no contents but dependencies

2. I've installed VLC and the vlc plugin for firefox and the only thing I get is a black window and the text "(no video)" great. Well not quite what it was supposed to do.

3. This is essential since enjoying video in the www is a killer feature in modern OSs !

the point is that video isn't played in Firefox although about:plugins shows plugins for the desired filetypes

Boris,

Could you provide a link to the video that does not play?

Which plugin is installed for movie formats (type about:plugins in url
bar and hit return to get a list of what is installed) ?

I think I got VLC and mplayer. I uninstalled the Totem plugin yesterday.
The about:plugins list is attached.

I have removed the VLC plugins and now I can see video.
The WMV performance is really bad, but Quicktime is doing great.
