Bug Description

Binary package hint: language-support-ja

Some pdf files don't have fonts included in them. In the default dapper or edgy installation with full japanese language support included, there is no way to read those files (like [1] below), using either of the following programs: xpdf, gpdf, evince, acroread.

However, in multiverse, there is a package called 'xpdf-japanese' which allows to see these files at least in xpdf and evince.

Therefore, the package xpdf-japanese should be moved to main and language-support-ja should depend on it.

The URL is gone, but I found the file in a backup. Attaching here so it does not get lost.

Still a problem in hardy.

I have xpdf-japanese installed. xpdf now displays the file OK. evince is still broken. So is acroread which apparently has its own package (not sure there is something in Ubuntu) for Japanese support. acroread displays a warning that the "Japanese Language Support Package" is needed to display the file properly. An URL on adobe.com is given for download of the pack.

Changed in evince:
importance: Undecided → Medium

the xpdf-japanese poppler equivalent is poppler-data, did you try to install this one?

I've just tested on an up-to-date hardy, cannot read the attached PDF with evince without poppler-data installed, but can read it after having installed poppler-data. Note that there are some licensing concerns with poppler-data: specifically that modification is prohibited. This violates the requirements for the main repository (as any discovered bugs cannot be fixed).

the issue is not an evince one, it can't depends on poppler-data which is in multiverse
