@Wylde, thanks for taking the time to report this bug. It does indeed seem it's not a bug with bind9. I am changing the affects back to Ubuntu, as this requires further investigation as what package it affects. Thanks

Interesting extract from log:

I think the original problem is actually with fetchmail. From earlier in the DpkgTerminalLog file:

Preparing to replace fetchmail 6.3.17-4ubuntu1 (using .../fetchmail_6.3.17-4ubuntu1.1_amd64.deb) ...^M
 ^[[31m*^[[39;49m /etc/fetchmailrc not found.^M
