Bug Description

When installing software using Ubuntu Software Centre, a dialog box pops up requesting authentication. This dialog does not receive focus, so one must manually click or tab to the text box in order to enter the password.

This seems like an anomaly -- normally when authentication is required, clicking to focus the text box is not necessary. As an example, when I load Synaptic Package Manager, the screen dims slightly and the dialog box is in focus.

Thanks!

Thanks a lot for reporting this, however I have been unable to reproduce the effect you describe. When I opened the Software Centre and attempted to install 7zip, the authentication dialogue that appeared was immediately given focus. I am using Ubuntu 10.10.

Can you confirm which version of Ubuntu you are using?

Hmm. I am using 10.10 too. I installed the Netbook version initially, but I am using desktop. Kernel is 2.6.35-24, and Gnome is 2.32.0.

It leaves focus on the main application after I click on the "install" button, whether I install from a category list or click on "more info" and then click "install".

Does this happen with anything else that require authentication, such as the update manager, synaptic, etc?

It doesn't happen elsewhere. Normally when authentication is required (like when opening Synaptic) the screen dims and the dialog box is in focus.

I should mention that I'm using no desktop effects. Not sure if that's relevant.

I've actually noticed a few weird quirks with the Software Centre -- a couple of mouseover quirks and the seemingly anomalous use of theme colours are two -- but that's another conversation, I suppose. I'm normally an apt-get kind of person, but I've found the Software Centre really convenient at times.

I've watched a couple of videos on Youtube of people demonstrating the Software Centre, and they authentication dialogue in all those videos gets focus each time. For example:

Since this doesn't appear to be reproducible every time, I am lead to believe this is not a design flaw, rather a simple bug appearing in some systems that needs fixed.
