This is a duplicate of closed bug 280767. Please see that bug for all pertinent details. The bug was marked as "expired" but it still exists in Maverick.

I'm opening a new one since there is a comment on that bug which says: "If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference bug 280767 in your report if you think it may be related.)"

However, it is not just "related" it is identical. Feel free to reopen that bug if that makes more sense than this duplicate.

Additional comment: "ubuntu-bug xorg" told me I had installed drivers directly from nvidia and asked me to confirm that I had uninstalled them. I couldn't proceed unless I said "yes" to that question. However in fact I have not installed, nor of course uninstalled, drivers directly from nvidia in many years.

Hi, have you had a chance to test if this bug is still present in natty?

If it does (and if you're the original reporter), please boot into natty
and run the command:

  apport-collect <bug-number>

which will update the bug with fresh logs and tag the bug as affecting
natty. (It is best to run this right after reproducing the problem.)
