Bug Description

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

System: IBM ThinkPad X31

On earlier versions of Ubuntu, a power/battery icon appeared in the panel. This provided an indication that the computer was either connected to the mains or a battery with a level indication of how much energy/time was left. In 10.04 LTS, this icon has been replaced with a lightning bolt icon (indicating it may be a desktop or running with no battery).

Further Info:
1 After being recommended to do a Terminal “laptop-detect -v”, the response came back “Laptop not detected” although it is a ThinkPad X31;
2 Issue was noticed on kernel 2.6.32-21-generic through 2.6.32-28-generic. May have occurred on an earlier kernel.

1 After being recommended to do a Terminal “sudo laptop-detect -v”, the response came back “We’re a Laptop”. This result is contrary to the "laptop-detect -v" result.

Hi gbiddis,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Any reason to have acpi=off in your kernel command line (bootloader)? It's what's causing battery status not being available

@Herton - Right on the money with that one. I overlooked that option. Thanks for your input.
