Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Natty Alpha 1 classic. Using Firefox window. Also had terminal up. Suddenly noticed the gnome-panel had disappeared. Only thing that would work was Ctrl-Alt-F1 so looked at kern.log with nano. The lines at the time of the incident were:

Jan 10 21:29:03 localhost kernel: [ 4624.052302] show_signal_msg: 6 callbacks suppressed
Jan 10 21:29:03 localhost kernel: [ 4624.052310] compiz[1257]: segfault at 4 ip 03d8b30b sp bf959690 error 4 in r300_dri.so[3d73000+2fa000]

This is Compaq 3.3 ghz Celeron ati radeon xpress 200.

The gnome-panel has "disappeared" several times this evening requiring sudo service gdm stop, sudo service gdm start from Ctrl-Alt-F1 command line.

I don't know if it will occur with Unity so I'll try that next.

Logged out of classic logged into Unity and got the same error again in kern.log:

Jan 10 21:49:48 localhost kernel: [ 5869.095588] compiz[4476]: segfault at 4 ip 054cc30b sp bf924860 error 4 in r300_dri.so[54b4000+2fa000]

so it doesn't appear to be gnome-panel vs. Unity related.

Please read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport#How%20to%20enable%20apport to enable apport so the next time this happens it will offer to submit a crash report. That report will give us the information needed to solve this issue. As apport will create a new bug report I've closed this one.

Changed in compiz (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid

Hooray! Today's login updates included: "Ubuntu classic, no effects"

I presume that means "no Compiz?" I used to turn off effects in the System > Preferences : Appearance but I don't see that window any more.

I was running about 5 to 15 minutes per Natty failure with either classic or Unity as in this bug. Updated, tried the "no effects" login option, now Natty classic has run for a couple hours no failure!

I didn't see an option for "Unity no effects"....

Thanks much, Jerry

Indeed, because it's not possible to run Unity without effects. That's the point of the classic mode. :)
